English for Business & Economics

In all three-year Economics degree programs in Genoa, the English for Business & Economics (9 CFU) exam is mandatory, so class attendance is recommended.

Professors admit to the exam only those with a language proficiency of at least B1 ( as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR).

English B1 proficiency

Students must demonstrate (at the time of the exam) B1 proficiency by bringing one of the following documents:

  • an international language certification from among those on this list (check here!), obtained no earlier than May 2022;

  • the certificate of passing the test at the end of the B1 online course, not older than 3 years

  • the certificate of passing at CLAT the preparatory test (B1 test) for the verification of language proficiency for outgoing Erasmus students, not older than 3 years.

Assessment Test - if you matriculated in 2024/2025

If you are a freshman in A.Y. 24/24 and need information about the English Assessment Test, please visit the dedicated page on the CLAT website.

Please note: the Assessment Test is mandatory for Freshmen a.y. 2024/2025 and must be taken by December 2024

Online B1 course - if you matriculated before 2024/2025 or you did not sit the English B1 Assessment test in the September-December 2025 sessions

To acquire B1 English skills, access the B1 online course  (link being update) (accessible from October 2024) with your UniGePASS credentials, and by entering the password Economics_2023. (credential being update)

The B1 online course is a self-study course divided into 3 modules, consisting of 4 units each and 3 Exam Practice sections. Each unit involves about 5 hours of work for a total of about 60 hours. For optimal learning, adequate time must be spent on the completion of each exercise.

Each activity is graded. The minimum score is 6 out of 10, and if a sufficiency is not obtained a red cross will appear next to the activity: this means that it needs to be repeated until a sufficiency is obtained. Sufficiency is indicated with a green tick next to the activity.

Only upon completion of the course, you access the final test. The test will be considered passed with at least 60% correct answers.

VERY IMPORTANT: Starting from the 26th June 2025 sitting the English B1 test will be offered in its updated version. Please find here https://cla.aulaweb.unige.it/mod/quiz/view.php?id=2312 an ENB1 test demo and description. (link being update)
