Third Mission of the Department of Economics

In addition to teaching and research, the Department of Economics (DIEC) is strongly committed to the Third Mission, understood as the set of activities aimed at disseminating, applying, and enhancing the knowledge produced within the academic context, with the goal of making a tangible contribution to the economic, social, and cultural development of society.

The Department seeks to strengthen the dialogue between the university and the broader community by promoting initiatives that support the growth and innovation of businesses, institutions, and local areas. In this context, DIEC aims to consolidate and expand knowledge transfer activities through specialized consulting, collaborations with public and private entities, and public engagement initiatives. The Department also promotes academic entrepreneurship and initiatives related to economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

Economic Café

Among its most noteworthy initiatives is the Economic Café project, a YouTube channel conceived and produced with the direct involvement of DIEC students. The channel features interviews and podcasts with faculty members and experts on current economic issues.

A key focus is also placed on the enhancement of the University’s scientific, historical, and cultural heritage, fostering openness toward citizens and promoting the social role of the university. In this regard, the Department directly manages the Doria Archive, a documentary collection of exceptional historical and economic value, made available to the scientific community and the public for research, conservation, and dissemination purposes.

Special attention is devoted to lifelong learning. Faculty members from the Department actively participate in the UniGeSenior program, designed for citizens over the age of 45 who wish to explore current economic and social topics in an open, inclusive, and intergenerational setting.

UniGe Senior

Since 2021, DIEC has adopted an innovative reporting tool: the Mission Report, among the first of its kind at the departmental level in Italy. This document, published regularly on the Department’s website, represents an act of transparency and accountability toward stakeholders, offering a comprehensive overview of the activities carried out, the strategies implemented, and the results achieved in relation to its institutional goals of teaching, research, and Third Mission.
