Curricular Traineeships in Italy

You may undertake a curricular traineeship with companies, public bodies, foundations, associations, professional firms, and self-employed professionals that have an active agreement with the University of Genoa.

You are eligible to undertake a curricular traineeship if you are enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme (or in a postgraduate programme).
The traineeship must begin and end while you are enrolled in the same degree programme; therefore:
- You may not start a traineeship during your Bachelor’s degree and continue it into your Master’s degree.
- You may not undertake a traineeship during a “bridge career” or while attending a single course.
- You must terminate the traineeship if you lose your student status, for example, if you graduate or withdraw from your studies.

A curricular traineeship may last for a maximum of 12 months for each degree cycle (Bachelor’s and Master’s).

To undertake an traineeship, you must:

(From the DIEC Traineeships Regulations)

For all Bachelor’s and Master’s students

  • For each degree cycle, you may carry out only one curricular traineernship for which university credits (CFU) are awarded.
  • During your traineernship, you will be supported by a company tutor appointed by the host organisation and an academic tutor selected by you from among the available Economics faculty members, who may belong to a different degree programme from the one you are enrolled in. For traineernships linked to final degree projects, the academic tutor must be your Bachelor’s dissertation supervisor or Master’s thesis advisor.
  • You may terminate the traineernship by giving adequate notice to both the host organisation and the Traineernship Office. However, an traineernship that is terminated before the end date stated in the learning agreement cannot be credited.

For Bachelor’s students

  • You may undertake a curricular traineeship for credit only after having earned at least 90 CFU in your study plan.
  • The CFU awarded for a curricular traineeship depend on the total number of internship hours completed:
  • 6 CFU for at least 150 hours, to be completed within a maximum of 4 months.
  • 9 CFU for at least 225 hours, to be completed within a maximum of 6 months.
  • If you are enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree programme in Economics, completing a curricular internship—whether or not it carries credit—meeting the above criteria will grant you a 1-point bonus on your final graduation grade.

For Master’s students

  • You may undertake a curricular traineeship for credit at any point during your Master’s programme; there is no minimum CFU requirement.
  • The standard duration of a curricular traineeship is three months, with the possibility of extension for a further three months upon a motivated request from the host organisation and with your consent.
  • A curricular traineeship awards 6 CFU provided you have worked at least 20 hours per week for a total of at least 240 hours over the three-month period.
